A 12 YEAR QUEST

MY STORY

This website represents 12 years of life spent poring over ancient manuscripts and vintage folios, following a trail of clues from publication to publication. It is the culmination of twelve years of time-consuming, often challenging, yet consistently enjoyable research.

Across the years, i have revisited these pages as my comprehension has deepened, anticipating that my interpretation will inevitably evolve or expand, presenting my work as an ultimate and unchanging piece would be imprudent, given the ever-expanding nature of this endeavour. I’ve developed an instinctive feel for old letter types, print errors and feint lines drawn on old leaves to help tell a story, a story that i am still discovering to this day.

Inside, you won’t find the work of a seasoned historical researcher or a literature expert with a pile of degrees. I am simply an individual who has transformed an interest into a hobby. I don’t presume to possess all the answers—quite the opposite. My hope is that what I share on this site inspires readers to contribute to the exploration of the Green Man, possibly addressing some of the questions my book raises.

My primary goal is to unveil fresh insights, steering away from the reiteration of old, redundant myths and tales. I narrow my focus on specific aspects, particularly delving into cryptology and steganography, while briefly touching on already established facts and backgrounds.

A recurring theme in my research is the concept of “doing the labour,” the constant process of refining and revising that has aided my understanding through all the errors and misinterpretations I have made over time. One author we will visit often in this book, Daniel Mogling calls this the outer work (parergon). In Greek, this stands for ’embellishment’ or something which is additional to ‘the main undertaking’ (eregon), such as a column on a building or picture frame that appeals to the senses but also helps to add the finishing touches to a piece of work. Which, as you will see, brings us not only onto the Green Man and the world of so-called printer’s ornaments, but also the esoteric landscape of alchemy and the messages hidden within images and artworks.

My aspiration is that you derive as much pleasure from reading this information as I did from researching and compiling the content you are about to explore. So dip your toes into this intricate and fascinating story, and see where it leads you. The Green Man beckons…
